Tier capabilities

Consumption is serverless and per-call. Basic v2 introduces SLA but limits multi-region and VNet. Standard v2, GA in 2026, adds VNet integration that previously required Premium. Premium v2 retains multi-region scale-out, availability zones, and the largest cache.

Each Premium unit and each additional region carry separate uplifts. The per-region figure is published.

Front Door, App Gateway, WAF bundling

Many Azure customers run APIM behind Azure Front Door for global edge plus App Gateway with WAF v2 for L7 protection. The bundled bill is rarely just the APIM line. Plan to add Front Door routing and rules plus WAF policies.

Recent change

Basic v2 and Standard v2 tiers reached GA during 2026 (introduced as preview in 2023). Standard v2 now includes VNet integration previously gated to Premium.

Editor's note

Consumption tier is per-call (first 1M free per Azure subscription, then ~$3.50 per million). Developer tier is non-production only. Premium v2 multi-region adds per-unit and per-region uplifts. v1 SKUs (Basic/Standard/Premium) remain available but Microsoft is steering net-new workloads to v2.
